What is BMI?
Body Mass Index is the measurable height/weight ratio which means “Vücut Kitle Indeksi (Body Mass Index) in Turkish.
The numerical value corresponding to this ratio indicates whether the person is in normal weight, overweight, obese, severe obesity or morbid obesity.
Morbid obesity means being fat enough to cause the life-threating diseases which lead to shorten the lifetime.
Body Mass Index is determined by dividing the square of the height (in meter) to the weight (in kilogram).
BMI – Obesity Index
The Body Mass Index score/ratio is 90/ (1.68 x 1.68)=32 for the person with 90 kilogram weight and 1.68 cm height. According to the data of World Health Organization (WHO) this result means that the person is obese.
For the results: 20-25=Normal, 25-30=Overweight, 30-35=Obese, 35-40=Severe Obesity, 40 – more than 40=Morbid Obesity
In patients with severe obesity, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, liver fattening, severe knee calcification, sleep apnea, severe reflux disease are about to occur.
All of the Morbid obese surgical techniques which are weight reducing are called “Bariatric Surgery.”

“Bariatrics” is a branch of medicine that deals with causes, prevention and treatment of obesity. Control of excess-weight is provided by diet, lifestyle recommendations, exercise, medication and surgical recommendations, if necessary.
What is Post-Bariatric Surgery?
Post-bariatric surgery is shaping procedures which restore/correct deformities and excess skin due to excessive weight loss and that make suitable for body by surgical techniques.
Bariatric is the field of specialization of the internal diseases specialist, bariatric surgery is the field of specialization of the general surgeons, and post-bariatric surgery is the field of specialization of the plastic surgeons.
By considering the average height in males is 1.72cm and in females is 1.63cm in Turkey (According to data of Turkish Statistical Institute in 2007), the weight limit is 73.7 kg in males, and is 66 kg in females for being normal in the body mass index according to WHO criteria.
