Female Type Breast in Men (Gynecomastia)

In ancient Greek language, gynec means (feminine) and mastos means (breast)

Gynecomastia is a benign female-type breast growth in men and is seen in 6 of every 10 males in a period of life.

It occurs due to circulation estrogen/androgen imbalance. Gynecomastia due to adipose/fatty tissue accumulation is called pseudo gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is observed in newborn child due to estrogen passing through placenta at birth, in the puberty that the hormone transition is peaked and in physiological and/or natural way in advanced age.

Also, gynecomastia can be observed in some types of cancer, especially in the testicular cancer, in patient with hyperthyroidism, in people who consume/use excessive alcohol, in patients with liver-kidney diseases, in people who take drugs containing hormone, in people who take drugs for ulcer, and other drugs such as digoxin, some antibiotics or diazem.

Gynecomastia should be persisted for at least 6 months after medical treatment in order to be treated surgically. Shaping procedures/operations are performed to reduce the big breasts which cannot be reduced after medical treatment. These surgeries are rarely performed with a long surgical incision.

Treatment: It is the removal of hard fibrous tissues localized behind fat tissue and areola. (liposuction)For this purpose, thin (1-2mm diameter) cutting cannula which are powered, mechanical (classic) or are operated through laser are preferred and used. After surgery, compressive tight corset is used for 2-3 weeks in order to prevent subcutaneous fluid accumulation

The outcomes/results obtained with this technique are quite satisfactory for the patients in terms of biopsychosocial. The procedure is frequently recommended before summer. The shaping is provided to breasts and upper body with a tiny trace disappearing in 4-6 months and a single stitch that is taken out/removed in 10 days. The duration of hospital stay is 4-6 hours and there is no need to use antibiotics.

You should prefer an experienced plastic surgeon in order to avoid unforeseen side effects and complications. Also, breast cancer which is rarely encountered in men is usually associated with testicular atrophy (reduction).
