    Jaw Aesthetics

What are the problems and causes requiring jaw aesthetics?

The aesthetic problems related to the jaw are large jaw, wide jaw, underbite jaw, small jaw, retrognathia and asymmetric jaw. The jaw problems of the skeletal structure are related to other facial bone structures and may be part of syndrome.

The placement and size of the jaw is related to the facial aesthetics, contour, profile, image of the face. The jaw aesthetics is evaluated together with the degree of the relationships between the other facial organs, especially the jaw-neck relationships. The artistic expression of the jaw size in history and today has been used to represent power and intelligence. Large and apparent haw masculine implies to the determination, warrior and machoism, while the small and short jaws are perceived by being associated with being smart and dapper. The most apparent feature of the Batman character, which is a classic example of fantastic cinema, is the power and warrior image, which are reflected by artists who has large and wide jaws.

What are the conditions for ideal jaw? Is there any difference in male / female?

For normal jaw aesthetics, the reference is distance angle and relationships between adjacent organs. Considering the gonion/mandibula and scalp line, the length of the jaw corresponds to 1/3 of the face. According to these references, the 1/3 of the face is the area between the imaginary line passing between each eyebrow and the line passing through the nasal tip. As it is predicted, the upper face area, is the forehead area between the two eyebrows and the scalp.

The 1/3 of the mandibular which is the dominant decisive/characteristics of the lower facial area, is between the nasal tip and the junction line of each 2 lips, while the lower 2/3-area of the mandibular is the most common area of the jaw problems. All size, distance and angular deviations of this area cause aesthetic problems that need to be corrected/operated in terms of jaw, facial integrity and aesthetics. Angularly, the forefront end point of the jaw should be in alignment with the depth point of the forehead-nose angle between the two eyebrows for the ideal face-mentum relationships.

Another dominant aesthetic unit related to the lower 1/3 area of the whole face image is the mandibula, mendum.

The reference points for idea jaw size and placement are different for female and male. Unlike female, the apparent jaw structure in male is not attract attention, even when creating a masculine image, large and wide jaws are often observed/perceived with large and wide nose, and the small jaw is often observed/perceived with small nose. Mentalis, which is the muscle in the mandibula, is responsible for the dimple, that is frequently observed at the mandibula.

For an ideal jaw medical examination, the teeth are very important. The relationship between lip and teeth must be evaluated. The lower lip should completely covered the lower incisor teeth. In the jaw augmentation and maxillomandibular advancement surgery, as the 30% of the bone advancement (implant) will be overshadowed by soft tissues, the advancement distance and structure to be corrected/fixed should be carefully planned. The teeth alignment is characterized to be effective image characteristic with angular ratio with the upper jaw, as well as the angle with the neck, the double chin occurred due to lipoidosis, and its position by being in front, back, asymmetric, small, large, pointed and wide depending on the facial oval.

Deformities and asymmetries in the skeletal system may be partially removed/corrected by fillings, fat grafts or skin procedures, while in very advanced cases, it may be necessary to perform operations which requires long-term recovery period to reshape the bones by breaking or stretching.

    What is micrognathia?

We consider the problem of small jaw (micrognatia), a common problem in society, with the jaw in the back (retrognathia), in other words volumetric and contour silhouette malformations. As a result of the holistic evaluations by making according to proportional angulation of the facial skeletal system and teeth alignment, if the problem is limited to the mandibular, then the surgery called mentoplasty is required. Common procedures in this area are called jaw aesthetics.

    What is jaw augmentation?

The permanent implants placed at the mandibula can augment and extend the jaw, while correcting asymmetry and deformity. Facial profile, jaw-neck angle, jaw length, size, side silhouette and permanent image change are provided in jaw aesthetics surgeries that the implants which interact with surrounding tissues due to silicone and porous structure.

When it is performed intra-oral, post-operative lower lip edema and intra-oral care is required for 10 days. The surgery is completed with the indistinct 3cm-scar when the surgical intervention is performed in the maxillary area. These surgeries have many effects which are stated to be correctional, supplementary and psychologically satisfactory with the facial image and body perception.

Another factor to be considered in maxillofacial surgeries is to provide the jaw augmentation without using large implants in young patients because bone loss/osteolysis and loses caused by these implants used in order to perform jaw aesthetics in advanced age, may cause apparent jaw deformities and asymmetries. Many of these surgeries are performed intraoral technique, so they can recover without apparent scars.

The procedures which can be performed under local anesthesia, but need to be performed in the general hospital, are completed in approximately 45 minutes. It is obligatory to wear compressive bandage for 3-4 days to complete recovery period in ideal period for patients whose surgeries are performed through mandibular area.

The jaw augmentation and aesthetics procedures with the implant can be combined with the vaser liposuction technique to provide contour and remove excess fat in the neck and double chin area simultaneously.

Genioplasty is also performed through intraoral technique, and the aesthetic expectations are met by rasping, shaving or removing the bone structures

    Advantages
