    Breasts from a Bio-Psyche -Socio-Aesthetic Perspective

What is the Aesthetic Value of the Breasts?

“The functional and aesthetic value of an organ is as much as the problem that would be faced once this organ is lost (ns)”

Breasts, which provide milk at maturity and complete our body (us) with their shape as much as their existence, which represent us in our social environment as much as they determine the size of our dresses and underwear, and most importantly which are aesthetic objects as a whole; are, most important body parts of the women, which they should naturally and justifiably protect, continuously check and make a fuss over.

Our genetic codes is one of the most important factors that play role in deformation, in an unaesthetic way, of our breasts, which also lose their vitality and natural and proportional look in time, depending on negligence, gravity, diseases and in some cases long periods of breastfeeding.

Cancer, which is increasing in prevalence, is the most important problem for the breasts, which could lose their aesthetic value and its harmony with the whole body due to reasons such as loose skin structure, raid weight gain and loss, uncontrolled use of hormone-containing drugs, the way and the time of bra usage, professional sports based on arm power (volleyball, tennis, swimming, oarsmanship and archery) imperfect and deficient aesthetic surgical interventions that do not meet the expectations, fillers, and/or fat transfers, unanticipated congenital anomalies, and unfortunate accidents such as burns. And

In lowering risk of breast cancer, for whose treatment early diagnosis is the most important determinant, factors such as age, nutrition, style and quality of life and hormonal balance play an important role, in addition to the family history.

Radiologists, who work attentively and meticulously in detecting the masses, micro hardness and tumor structures, make great contribution to the duration and quality of the patientsˊ lives. It is a known fact that in some cases, it could be impossible to make the correct diagnosis as to such hard palpable masses are just physiological, that is harmless, or they are caused by a traumatic aesthetic operation (filer and/or fat transfer or breast augmentation).

It would be to their interest if women, who are at the fertility age and who has a family history of cancer, think twice before deciding to undergo such operations. Fortunately, even in cases where the patient loses both breasts, plastic surgery presents safe options to have new breasts.

When the aesthetics of the breasts are evaluated with a holistic approach, it is necessary to take into account the criteria such as height and structure of the body, the shoulder points, diameter of the body, nipples, symmetry, size and location. The distance of the nipples to the pre-determined reference points, shape and size of the nipples, the location of the brown circle around the nipples, which is also called areola, are among the building blocks that give aesthetic value to the breasts in a holistic way.  Then, what is the aesthetic value of the breasts?

The “aesthetic value”, which is valid for breasts, is the degree by which the state and the characteristics of an organ or an object is compatible with their ideal status. When compared with the ideal one, the aesthetic value of an organ is as much as the degree by which the determined standards are met.

It is not possible to describe the physiological injury that is felt with the loss of breasts, which are the most important objects of sexuality and femininity for the women. Whether it is the loss of breasts, their asymmetric structure, or their deformation in time, this inexplicable feeling of injury is always accompanied by the hope and expectation of being completed. The completion of this sense of the self, which always reminds herself of her deficiency, can be obtained, not just with anatomic correction but also with self-approval before the mirrors and in the social environments. Therefore, all corrective, regenerative and reparative operations should be such that they could meet personal expectations in harmony with other characteristics of the body. This is so, because, breasts are a pairs of organs that have biological, psychological, sociological and aesthetic value. And we can add the functionality to these characteristics as they provide milk during a certain stage in our lives.

In short and summary, “Beauty is the Harmony with the Whole” (ns), and any aesthetic operation, which does not make any contribution to this harmony does not have any “aesthetic value”, whatever the change and transformation it could provide in the area it is applied.
