Ordinarius

It is an academic title given to scientists who have worked as a professor for five years, are known in international scientific circles for their studies and books, and have a chair at a university.

The title, which started to be awarded in 1933, was abolished in 1960 (1981?) in Turkiye. The first holder of the title is Harvard graduate science historian Aydın Sayılı, and the last holder of the title of ordinaryus is Reşat Kaynar, professor of law and philosophy, who passed away in 2006.

Dr. is the first person to initiate stem cell treatments, which are trending in plastic surgery all over the world and in our country. Süreyya Tahsin Aygün is one of the scientists who received this title.

We know him as the veterinarian who prevents the use of a drug called Thalidomide, which causes terrible complications such as #Phocomelia, in Türkiye.

Between 1959 and 1962, 2,500 babies in West Germany, where the use of the drug was legal, and 500 in Britain, were born with small or dysfunctional limbs. While the drug’s entry into Turkey was at the approval stage, Aygün’s efforts paid off and it is reported that Turkey is the second country other than the USA where this drug cannot enter.

Ord. Prof. Dr. Süreyya Tahsin Aygün was a heroic commander who participated in the First World War and the War of Independence and was awarded the Independence Medal.
